Roll Over is always a fun trick to show off to family and friends how smart your dog is.
How To:
How To:
- Have your dog in the Down (laying down) position. If you do not know Down, click here.
- Kneel down, facing your dog while he is in the down position. Hold a treat in front of his nose and move it to the side of his head opposite the direction you want him to roll in.
- When you are ready to move to the next step, continue the motion with your hand as you move the treat fro his shoulder blade toward his backbone. This should lure him to roll onto his back and over to hi other side. Praise and reward the moment he land on his opposite side. To begin you can praise and reward if your dog makes it half way onto his back, then continue to coax him over.
- As he improves say "roll over" and use a more subtle hand gesture. It often helps to lean your body in the direction of the roll over, to remind your dog of what his is suppose to do.
What to Expect
Practice five to ten times per session and in a week or two your dog should be rolling over with just a hand gesture.
