How to make yogurt powder

If you like making your own dog treats but can't find yogurt powder to make a healthy icing for them, you can make yogurt powder at home.
See the directions below on how to make your own yogurt powder at home.

What You Need:
One container of plain natural yogurt. You can use 0%, 1,2 or 3%.
1 cheese cloth
Hand strainer
Wire rack
Baking sheet

Instructions:
Steps 1-3 are optional. I prefer draining a lot of the excess water first.
Preheat oven to 150°f or 60°c.

1.  fold the cheese cloth in half and place lay evenly in the hand strainer. Place the strainer on a small bowl or any container the strainer will fit on top of.
2. Empty the yogurt onto the cheese cloth.
3. Twist the the excess cheese cloth till firm. Put into the fridge for 4-6 hours or overnight.
4. Line a wire rack with parchment paper, NOT wax paper.
5. Spread the yogurt evenly and fairly thin.
6. With a spatula, score the yogurt.
7. Place the wire rack onto a cookie sheet.
8. Place the baking sheet in the oven on the middle rack and dry at 150°f or 60°c for 4-7 hours, depending on thickness and oven temperatures.
9. The yogurt will dry from the outer edges first, as the yogurt dries, remove from the oven and place to the side.  Continue doing this until all the yogurt has dried.
10. Once all the yogurt is dry, put it into a coffee grinder or personal blenders and grind the yogurt down for approx 1 min.
11. Spread the ground yogurt back on to the parchment paper and wire tray and place back in the oven for approx. 20-40 mins.  Watch the yogurt closely as it will burn easily; if you see the ground yogurt starting to turn light brown, remove it from the oven right away.
12. Remove the ground yogurt from the oven and let cool completely.
13. Place in the coffee grinder, and grind for 1 min.
14. Place the yogurt powder into an zip lock bag or air tight container.

Add yogurt powder to muffins, cookies, cakes, or any recipe that calls for yogurt.

Crunchy Beef Liver Treats with Yogurt Coating

If you enjoy making treats for your dogs you will love this easy versatile recipe. I use the base of this recipe to make cookies, hard treats, cupcakes and muffins just by changing the amounts of the ingredients.

I make these for my dogs and my clients dogs and all of them get so excited when they see my treats, to date  not one dog has turned these treats down.

Ingredients:
1 lb beef or chicken liver
1 egg
1/2 cup water
1 cup corn meal
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ

Yogurt Coating
1 small container plain natural yogurt (you can use any fat content. Higher the fat content the less opaque the coating will be.
1/4 tsp vegetable oil
1/4 tsp Guar Gum (you can get this at Bulk Barns or any health food store)
1 tbs corn syrup or honey
1 to 2 tbs non-instant skim milk powder
Gel or powdered food color ( favorite colors)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Boil or steam the liver until fully cooked (no pink). Rinse under cold water until fully cooled. Add liver and egg in a food processor and liquefy; add water slowly, you do not want the liver mixture to runny.

In a large bowl, add corn meal, flour, wheat germ and mix together. Next add liver mixture to the flour and stir until it forms into a dough.  Continue to mix with your hands and add a little flour at a time to get a workable dough you can roll out.

Roll out the dough to approx 1/4 inch thick and use your favorite cookie cutter. Place cookies on backing sheet and bake at 325o for 35-45 mins or until fully dried. Remove from oven and let cool. Store in zip lock bag or air tight containers.

If you want to decorate your treats with  a yogurt coating follow the directions below:

In a small bowl combine vegetable oil, and corn syrup or honey and mix together. Add guar gum and mix really well and ensure there are no lumps. Next, in a separate add the small container of plain yogurt and mix until smooth.  Add approx 1/4  of the oil and corn syrup mixture to the yogurt and mix very will. You are looking for a shinny, gummy texture that still pours easily. Add a little skim milk powder at a time and mix until completely smooth. Add only enough skim milk powder to thicken your coating so it's thick enough to easily paint or use a squeeze bottle.

Last, separate mixture into different bowls and add desired color then decorate your treats any way you like.  Place decorated treats onto wax paper covered cookie tray to dry.  Air drying takes approx 8-14 hours and oven dry takes approx 1-3 hours.  To oven dry, preheat oven to 150 degrees and place cookie sheet on middle rack to dry. Periodically, check the drying of your treats. Once you can lightly touch them with no sticking to your fingers they can be removed and cooled. Do not store your treats until the coating has completely dried.

Store in zip lock bag or air tight container

I would love to hear how your dogs liked these treats.  If you have any questions or any problems with this recipe, please leave your comments.

PictureA friend of mine breeds Bernese Mountain Dogs and designer Bernoodles (Bernese-Standard Poodle hybrid) Paws Awhile Kennels. Paul is a great breeder who truly loves his dogs and most important takes amazing care of his four legged family.

If you are looking for a reputable breeder of Bernese Mountain Dogs then I highly recommend Paws Awhile Kennels.

Paws Awhile Berners is a professional breeder of Bernese Mountain Dogs and designer Bernoodles (Bernese-Standard Poodle hybrid). We operate in a humane and responsible environment. The Bernese is a highly social breed who craves the attention and interaction of people and other dogs. We are proud of our kennel-free facility where our dogs roam free throughout our 5 acre property.

We are located in the small village of Eady, Ontario. We're just a little north of Barrie. You are welcome to visit our facility and meet our pack. Most litters are spoken for by the time they are whelped, but you're always welcome to visit while a litter is being reared to see for yourself just how wonderful a Bernese puppy can be.
Our puppies stay under the care of their birth-mother until at least the age of 8 weeks, at which time, depending on their health and temperament, they are eligible for adoption. If you've done your homework on the breed, you know how big some of those puppies can grow! Please spend some time in our Meet-The-Parents section to familiarize yourself with each of our male and female breeders when considering the characteristics you're hoping for in your new family member.

When you feel your family is ready to adopt a Bernese Mountain Dog, we encourage you to visit our Upcoming Litters section and place a deposit on a male or female puppy from the upcoming litter of your choice. You can follow your puppy's development and begin to prepare for your new family member.

Diamond Delight Dog Treats

My name is Liz, and I decided to start making my own dehydrated dog treats for one main reason. Health concern, with all the issues surrounding treats made from China and dog dying I wanted to be sure what I was giving my dog was healthy.

Made with Canadian beef liver, no preservatives, artificial colors or additives. Our treats are one of the only treats where the main ingredient is beef liver and vegetables; corn flour, unbleached flour and eggs are added as binding ingredients only.

Diamond Delight Dog Treats are truly a treat you can feel good about giving to your dog.
